With surprisingly little fanfare, Carl Craig has minted a brand new solo project, No Boundaries, with a limited edition vinyl-only release on Planet E, out now.

No Boundaries is an avowedly experimental venture, and the abstract, beatless tracks on this EP, Modular Pursuits, have nothing to do with the dancefloor and everything to do with Craig exploring the burbling inner life of his synths. It’s a bit of a headfuck, and in places actually rather annoying, but if you’re into the kind of wobbly electronics espoused by the likes of Jonny Trunk, Bernard Parmegiani and Ghost Box, you’ll probably want to check it out (just don’t expect any of those guys’ bucolic charm).

Planet E describes Modular Pursuits as a ‘production enhancement instrument DJ companion’, suggesting the tracks are intended as tools rather than closed works. This 12″ is apparently the first of two planned No Boundaries EPs , and it’s limited to 500 copies with “collectible art jacket”. All Craig himself has to say about the release is: “Unexpect the expected!”

You can listen to clips of the tracks here.
