Wavves announce new LP, Afraid Of Heights; stream track here

San Diego outfit Wavves are back with a new LP of vertiginous scuzz-pop.

Originally the solo project of frontman Nathan Williams, Wavves caught notice with scruffy lo-fi discs Wavves (2008) and Wavvves (2009). Williams’ more recent projects, however, suggested a more ambitious musical sensibility at work than originally suspected: King Of The Beach (2010) was a more sophisticated and intricate record than its predecessor, and Williams has since turned his hand to hip-hop production under the Sweet Valley alias.

As Pitchfork report, Williams and co will release their third album later this year. Afraid Of Heights will arrive in March, and promises 13 – well, 14, if you count the iTunes edition – new tracks. Williams reportedly funded all of the recording sessions privately, and promises a record whose “general theme…is depression and anxiety, being death-obsessed and paranoid of impending doom”:

“I feel like the narration is almost schizophrenic if you listen front to back; every word is important, even the constant contradictions and lack of self-worth. That’s all a part of this record – questioning everything not because I’m curious, but because I’m paranoid.”

One-time Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis also makes a guest appearance. Mom + Pop will release Afraid Of Heights on March 26. New track ‘Demon To Lean On’ is available below.
