Justin Timberlake could face legal action from sexual awareness organisation Take Back the Night

Justin Timberlake’s new single, ‘Take Back the Night’, has already led to repercussions for the 20/20 Experience singer.

The news hardly comes as a surprise: the song, which dropped on Friday evening, shares its name with the American sexual assault awareness foundation that has existed since the 1970s, raising awareness of sexual violence, domestic violence and more through events, rallies and other initiatives.

Speaking to RadarOnline over the weekend, Take Back The Night (read up on them here) executive director Katherine Koestner explained that “everyone at Take Back the Night is really shocked, because normally, we get asked when people want to use the name…Normally entities as large as Justin Timberlake do very kind and thoughtful things to support our cause.”

“All of a sudden on Wikipedia”, Koestner continues, “Take Back the Night has a different definition. That’s not been helpful … The lyrics are definitely very sexual and not at all clearly anti-sexual violence. ‘‘Use me,’ for example, is not a great phrase for anyone affiliated with the organization.”

According to Timberlake’s agent, the singer had never heard of the foundation until this weekend’s events (which may be true, though you’d think that somebody on his team would have been aware of it). “It’s a big song”, Koestner concludes, “and he didn’t take the necessary steps to make sure that it was appropriate. Normally they do have due diligence.”

Earlier this month, the video for Timberlake’s ‘Tunnel Vision’ was temporarily pulled from YouTube over its explicit content.
