A New York detective is suing rapper and producer Ryan Leslie for sampling a voicemail message left by him during an investigation.

Detective Luis Mortimer had left the message after the musician’s girlfriend, Nicole Trunfio, complained that Leslie was harassing her. The voicemail, which basically just asks Leslie to call back, was then used on the track ‘Joan of Arc’ from last year’s album Les Is More.

Mortimer did not find out that his message was sampled on the song until a few months ago, according to his attorney, who said the song had “caused him embarrassment” and “damaged his credibility as a detective.”

The case marks another unusual legal wrangle for the Cassie and Beyonce producer, who last year was ordered to pay $1 million to a man who recovered his laptop after initially promising the figure as a reward in 2010. [via All Hip-Hop]
