Philip Chevron revealed his struggle with inoperable cancer back in May. After being treated for cancer in 2007, a new tumor appeared in August 2012. He died Tuesday morning at age 56.

Chevron joined The Pogues after the release of their debut album, Red Roses for Me, to replace singer Steve Rapid. Since then, the guitarist had been a full time member of the band and countless others; in recent years, he’s become an unofficial spokesman for the band and oversaw the remastering of their back catalog. He also founded early Irish punk band The Radiators from Space. [via The Guardian]
