The score to the ambitious 8-bit game originally contained too much data for the NES to handle.

1990’s StarTropics remains one of the more ambitious games of the NES-era,and today we’ve learned it was even more ambitious that originally thought. A Youtube video by user Brad Smith titled “Fixing StarTropics” has revealed that sections of the game’s soundtrack have been broken since the game’s release roughly 25 years ago.

The video explains how sections of StarTropics’ soundtrack had too much data for the game’s 256 byte limit cause a series of glitches to occur that most just assumed was part of the games score. Reverse engineering the sounds Smith manages to restore the original music to sections of the game which for many will be heard for the first time.
