Minim is a Bluetooth MIDI controller designed for mobile music-making.

Livid Instruments has launched a Kickstarter for what it bills as “the world’s first wireless, pocket-sized instrument”.

Shaped like a mobile phone, the Minim has eight pads and a touch fader, as well as RGB LEDs with colour feedback. It also features 3D motion control, and connects wirelessly via Bluetooth.

As Livid explains, the Minim has been made as a reaction to the increasing popularity of mobile music-making, and a desire to make their products accessible to everyone. They claim it has “the feel and expression of a real instrument,” to attract those without prior experience with MIDI controllers.

Livid already has plenty of experience in making imaginative MIDI controllers, but the Minim is definitely the most portable the company has made. The instrument only launched on Kickstarter on July 29, but it’s already raised $29,000 of its $40,000 goal.

With a size slightly larger than an iPhone 6 and only marginally smaller than an iPad Mini however, it’s debatable as to whether the Minim could truly fit in your pocket, but the video below shows it’s got the potential to be a useful controller for those regularly using apps to make music.

At the moment the Minim is only compatible with iOS and OSX devices, but it’s still fairly cheap – $79 if you get in early enough, with pre-orders expected to arrive in February 2016. Pre-order it here.
