Preview the four-track release below.

One of our Australian labels-to-watch have announced an EP from Portuguese producer Elite Athlete. The emerging techno artist’s Californian Rites EP is the third release from fledgling Sydney imprint Cult Trip, following records from US producers J. Albert and Grey People.

The new EP from Elite Athlete, real name João de Almeida, marks his first physical release following a series of digital efforts on Portuguese labels including MiMi Records and Música Pop Desempregada. Californian Rites is his first new music since a 2013 EP on another Portugese imprint, Extended Records.

Californian Rites was recorded during a one year sabbatical in Hamburg and brings together a range of global influences. Harrowing African drum samples come to the fore on ‘Pagan Conjurer’ whilst Berlin-styled minimal basslines hold together the burning title cut. The four-track collection includes remixes from UTTU regular Palace and Melbourne experimentalist Dan White.

Elite Athlete’s Californian Rites EP is out on vinyl October 2. The digital release will follow on October 16.
