Next month, One Handed Music’s muggy percussionist/producer Mo Kolours will complete his year-long EP trilogy.

Tusk Dance promises another spiritous brew of classic dub, homespun pop and Mascarene Sega music. With the disc due on February 24, taster track ‘Promise’ is being given away by the label for nothing, and it’s right up there with his best.

Where, say, ‘Ridda Mountain’ (one of FACT’s favourite tracks of last year, incidentally) was all about groove and atmosphere, ‘Promise’ sees Mo Kolours putting an unforeseen emphasis on melody and harmony. Over the sort of cheery wobble that Peaking Lights wouldn’t turn their noses up at, the producer croons and purrs like John Holt. It’s certainly not dozy, though, with some skittering incidental percussion work adding urgency and drive. Between Drum Talking, Banana Wine and this, Mo Kolours has assembled a fine survey of his unique sound, and ‘Promises’ suggests a bright future once the trilogy has come to a close.
