Sampling fans, your time.

From 1989 to 1994, an ex-employee of Kmart, a US chain of discount stores, got into the habit of bringing home tapes of in-store music thinking “someday it would be kinda interesting.” That day has now come.

Mark Davis has shared his collection of Kmart in-store music tapes to the world via archive.org under the title: Attention Kmart Shoppers.

According to Davis, “the older tapes contain canned elevator music with instrumental renditions of songs. Then, the songs became completely mainstream around 1991. All of them have advertisements every few songs.”

Watch Davis play a handful of tapes and explain their history in the YouTube video below and head over to archive.org to get your hands on this treasure trove of sounds. [Via Chartattack]
