The Coronet in Elephant & Castle has had severe restrictions placed on its licence following an incident at the venue on November 8.

According to London SE1, the venue has been banned from hosting “urban/house music” events by Southwark Council after a fight broke out between 15 people during the House of Silk event on November 8.

The incident saw one man stabbed in the leg, a “noxious substance” such as pepper spray discharged and reports of security staff witnessing a man threatening others with a hand gun.

Southwark Police recommended that the council suspend The Coronet’s licence pending a full hearing, with PC Ian Clements writing in his application: “It is clear from initial reports that there has been a significant failure in security procedures at this venue.”

Southwark Council reportedly decided in a meeting on November 12 to instead impose restrictions on the type of events The Coronet can hold and ordered the use of search arches, before a full hearing to review the venue’s licence is held on December 8.

The decision has had a knock-on effect on several planned events. A drum and bass night due to take place over the weekend was moved to railway arches at Great Suffolk Street, while a Garage Nation event due to take place at the venue on November 21 has been cancelled after failing to find a new location.

“Initially we were told this would not affect us,” a statement from Garage Nation reads. “However it transpired yesterday that Coronet were not going to be allowed to operate any kind of large scale music event meaning they are no longer allowed to hold events like ours in the interim period of review.”

Despite Garage Nation’s claims of “large scale music” events not being permitted, a concert of music from the Final Fantasy games went ahead as planned on November 15.

The Coronet has faced an uncertain future in recent years due to regeneration in the area, but announced earlier this month its lease had been extended until 2017.
