Casio was an artist affiliated with Olympia institution K Records.
Artist and producer Joey Casio, real name Joseph Matlock, has been confirmed as one of the victims who died in the the Oakland warehouse fire that claimed the lives of 36 people in Oakland last Friday (December 2).
As ABC News reports, K Records’ Calvin Johnson said Matlock had been an artist on the label and lived in the city for 10 years before moving around. Johnson called him “the gentlest of people,” and added that his music could be “aggressive and so completely different from his personality.”
K Records is donating copies of Joey Casio singles released via its International Pop Underground series to raise money for the Ghostship Fire Relief Fund.
Cash Askew of Bay Area dream-pop band Them Are Us Too and 100% Silk artists Cherushii and Nackt, real names Chelsea Faith Dolan and Johnny Igaz, were also confirmed to have died in the devastating fire, which is thought to have been caused by a refrigerator. The converted warehouse, known as the Ghost Ship, was a performance space and artists’ studio that was hosting an event for Golden Donna’s 100% Silk west coast tour, also featuring Cherushii and Nackt.
