Clearly Romania’s Zoltan doesn’t have a problem with being a bit cheesy. ‘Memories’, the lead track from his new EP for Soupu Music, takes the airy voices of a track like Midland’s ‘Play the Game’, and pushes everything up into the clouds, resulting in a kind of Balearic UK Funky which doesn’t quite do either. In fact, scrap that “bit cheesy” line – it’s very cheesy.
Far more promising (and Zoltan is promising, particularly if the presumably newer tracks on his Soundcloud are anything to go by), are the two other originals on this EP, ‘On Shakers’ and ‘Jzzfzzl’. Far more grounded than ‘Memories’, I’m not sure if ‘Shakers’ really goes anywhere, but it’s supple as anything, flinging little glances of drums in every direction while moving on the spot. ‘Jzzlzzl’ is probably the most realised thing here, pure carnival Funky that gets the balance so right between heads high, good time music and driving, stone-carved drums. Definitely one to watch.
