Not to be too corny about it, but Jackmaster being signed up for a Fabric mix CD makes us pretty happy.

Our first introduction to Jack was at an off-Sonar party three years ago – we had no idea who he was, but he was playing back to back with Rustie at Plat du Jour and basically terrorized the place. It turned out he was the guy who ran Dress 2 Sweat, a Baltimore-indebted label that we were already following, and we asked him to do a FACT mix. It’s still one of the best we’ve had.

In the years since, Jack’s DJing and his A&R skills have gone from strength to strength, and as many of you doubtless know, around a year and a half ago Dress 2 Sweat (as well as Wireblock, a separate label that Jack ran with Calum and Neil Morton) were dissolved into Numbers, now one of dance music’s most celebrated imprints, with a reach way beyond its beginnings as a Glasgow clubnight.

One of the things that makes Jackmaster such a great DJ is the fact that despite having more upfront dubs in his bag than 99% of his peers, he doesn’t rely on them in the slightest – as his FabricLive tracklist proves, he’s got the knowledge and skill to lean on old material and make it sound as fresh as the day it came out. So although you’ll find recent tracks here from Addison Groove, Martyn, Jook 10 and more, they’re outweighed by classics from the likes of DJ Deeon, Aphex Twin, Armand Van Helden, Larry Heard, Model 500 and Wookie.

FabricLive 57: Jackmaster is due out on May 18. By the time of its release, Jackmaster will also be a resident DJ on Rinse, doing a fortnightly Numbers show with Spencer (a.k.a. Calum, his aforementioned partner in Wireblock and Numbers). The first show airs on April 19 from 11pm-1am.
