Carl Craig, Jeff Mills and Belleville Three honored with Spirit of Detroit Award
It’s been a pretty big week for celebrating Detroit’s contribution to the history of electronic music.
After the city’s mayor Mike Duggan officially dapped it Detroit Techno Week, the Detroit City Council honored many of the Motor City’s techno and house pioneers with the Spirit of Detroit Award.
The award, which acknowledges “outstanding achievement or service to the citizens of Detroit” was given to Carl Craig, Jeff Mills, Eddie Fowlkes, Kelli Hand, the Belleville Three (Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Derrick May) and group Underground Resistance. Institutions like Submerge – Detroit’s “secret” techno museum – and Movement Festival, which takes place this weekend, were also awarded.
“It feels great when you know something we’ve made from our hometown has touched the world,” Saunderson wrote on Facebook. “As they said yesterday, Detroit techno brings people together, Detroit love, our vision of music, the world dancing as one united, it’s true and it’s happened, so thanks to the city of Detroit for acknowledging this.”
