Praises “the rich culture of techno, which was created in the city of Detroit.”

The mayor of Detroit has officially proclaimed May 23 – May 30 Detroit Techno Week.

The announcement coincides with the city’s annual Movement festival, a three-day event first conceived in 2001 as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, which Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has called “one of the world’s most recognized electronic music festivals.”

These “festivities”, as Duggan wrote in the official paperwork, “celebrate the rich culture of techno, which was created in the city of Detroit.” This was birthed by the Belleville Three of Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson in the ’80s, with more artists still flying the flag for Detroit’s tough and minimal sound.

2016’s Movement festival sees Kraftwerk heading up the line-up, with Four Tet, Kyle Hall, MK, Seth Troxler, Caribou, Nina Kraviz, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig among the other acts set to play.

Derrick May’s compositions helped birth and then define a genreget to grips with his classic FACT mix.

Watch Carl Craig discuss Detroit, Prince and his biggest influences.
