Matter to close

Following a week of rumours and hearsay, a statement has been released by AEG confirming that London’s Matter club is closing its doors for summer, with speculation rife that the shut-down will be permanent.

According to Music Week, the club recorded losses in the region of ÂŁ1m in its first year accounts, while its owners Matter London Ltd had around ÂŁ3m worth of creditors.

In the statement Matter London says, “We can confirm that the Matter nightclub has temporarily closed over the summer period with a view to re-launching later in the year.

“This decision has been taken by the owners of Matter. The reopening will be considered over the course of the next few months and we will keep you advised when further information is available.”

The 2600-capacity club was founded by Fabric owners Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie in 2008. Part of the O2 Arena complex on the Greenwich peninsula in South London, Matter has played host to regular nights from Hospitality and RAM as well as many one-off events.

Details of the summer closure remain scarce; we’ll update you when we know more.

The acoustics in Matter were phenomenal, far, far superior to Fabric in my opinion. It was a 10 year advance on the original body kinetic system in Fabric so it was always going to be good. More people need to appreciate venues that are designed to sound good.
