The decline of London clubland looks set to continue, as T Bar‘s owners announced yesterday that it will be closing its doors with immediate effect.

The East London club, which achieved iconic status and considerable commercial success at its original central Shoreditch location, was forced to move in May 2009 to a more off-the-beaten-track location at 22 Houndsditch, Aldgate, where it has struggled to achieve significant footfall. A message from the T Bar facebook group was posted last night:

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that T Bar is now closed. After six and a half years of incredible music, outrageously good times and spectacular memories we are calling time on the T Bar rave.

Thanks to you all for your support, loyalty and for making T Bar the special place it has been for so long. Please feel free to upload photos and memories to this page….

Big love. The T Bar boys and girls.

T Bar was at its most vibrant in the mid-noughties, when it was still based on the corner of Shoreditch High Street and acted as a free, high quality for clubnights and afterparties, attracting a music-loving crowd treated to regular sets from the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Andrew Weatherall and Michael Mayer.

The reasons for its closure have not yet been made public, but it is probably safe to assume that they are financial. News of the club’s demise comes soon after that of Fabric going into administration and Matter closing for the summer, and amid continued fears that Plastic People’s days are numbered.
