In what is a perfectly logical but still pleasantly surprising move, Not Not Fun label boss Amanda Brown has started a new 12″ dance/dub imprint, 100% Silk.

Inaugurating 100% Silk is the mysterious Ital, whose ‘Ital’s Theme’ comes across as a homage to Cowley-ish synth-disco and lo-fi acid house, rigid snap-claps scything through 303 squelch ‘n bounce. More interesting and less off-puttingly jaunty is B-side ‘Queens’, a disco jam which has a more haunted, hollowed-out feel, but also real momentum, thanks to its rolling congas and ping-ponging marimba melody; it sounds like the kind of late 70s oddity Morgan Geist might have reissued on Unclassics. Rounding out proceedings is

The second 12″ is one for the hypnagogic dancehall. It’s by The Deeep, and features three new remixes of their track ‘Mudd’, which appeared on their 2010 Not Not Fun tape Life Light. The A-side is handed over to a luxuriant rework by The Deeep themselves; it has a similar ‘stepping pop feel to Brown’s recent LA Vampires productions, but is cleaner, more minimalist, the Portishead-esque vocal harmonies given room to circle the beats. The truly killer version comes from Brandon Hocura AKA Grand Am, who sculpts The Deeep’s original into a 9-minute  dub epic, replete with phased guitars and low-slung 808 patterns that’d make Prince Jammy proud. Guy Dallas rounds out the package with a jabbing, bass-heavy edit that feels like a more dancefloor-aimed compact of Hocura’s effort, but with the addition of some winning lost-in-the-rainforest effects.

It’s been clear for a while now that some of the most interesting new dance music on the planet is coming out of the US noise/synth underground, and this brace of excellent 12″s really rams the point home. Both are our now on digital as well as vinyl, and for more of a taster check out Amanda Brown’s video trailer for r ‘Muddy Tracks’:
