Sacramento’s apocalyptic rap unit Death Grips made quite an impact in 2011.

Their debut mixtape, Exmilitary, seemed to come out of nowhere to worry at the upper reaches of end of year charts, and with good reason: its tightly compressed form of sandblasted desert nihilism, featuring the inimitable drumming of Hella’s Zach Hill, was a breath of fresh air in a year defined – in some quarters at least – by politesse and nostalgia.

This track – seemingly untitled – is the band’s first foray into 2012, posted on their website last night. Rhythmically things are pretty straightforward (relatively speaking that is), but there’s no shortage of the usual sonic contortions: over an ungodly stomp, MC Ride’s vocal is squeezed through dehumanising delays and assailed by distorted sirens and a scratchy synth line that seems to bore itself into your skull like the unbearably bright light from an atomic blast. Perfect listening for a Wednesday morning, then.
