Save a turkey from the slaughterhouse and do your (8-)bit for our feathered friends.

Morrissey’s undying love for animals has been channelled into 8-bit form and transformed into a new arcade-style browser game called This Beautiful Creature Must Die.

The game’s title takes its name from a lyric in The Smiths’ 1985 pro-vegetarian classic ‘Meat Is Murder’ and has been created in collaboration with US animal rights organisation PETA. It features an instrumental 8-bit version of the aforementioned song on loop, echoing this jaunty Smiths compilation from last year.

In the game, players must act speedily to save chickens, turkeys and other livestock from their bloody end by tapping them before they fall to the bottom of the screen and into the slaughterhouse’s clutches.

In a press release, Morrissey has described the game as “the biggest social crusade of all” and a chance to “safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression.” He also made the kind of topical reference you thought the indie firebrand was totally immune to: “You don’t get that from Pokémon Go.” Play the game below.
