Unlike the throwback boogie of ‘Screwdriver,’ ‘Breakfast Can Wait’ is a lush bit of bedroom funk heavy on slap bass and a finger-snapping groove. Prince harmonizes with his own pitchshifted vocals as he labors through the saccharine lyrics about pre-breakfast lovemaking (“Hotcakes, smothered in honey (wait a min) / Imma have to pass / fresh cup of coffee (no, no) / I’d rather have you in my lap.”).
