Rough Trade Shops compile 'Indiepop 09'

Rough Trade Shops have compiled an new CD entitled Indiepop 09, due out on December 7 via V2 Cooperative, just in time to fill the Christmas stocking of your nearest sullen cardigan-wearer. Like we said, it’s called Indiepop 09, and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

There’s an ever-widening global network of new bands inspired by the heady days of C86 and assorted 80s Rough Trade releases, from the Young Marble Giants-inspired pop minimalism of The xx to the lo-fi scuzz-outs of Blank Dogs and Wavves. None of these three particular acts feature on Indiepop 09, but a whole host of their peers do: L.A. based ‘Dogs collaborators Dum Dum Girls (pictured) contribute the fantastic ‘Longhair’, while Girls – currently riding high on the critical success of their Album – weigh in with ‘Morning Light’. You want more girls? Vivian Girls also drop by with, er, ‘Moped Girls’ (which along with The Boy Least Likely To’s ‘The Summer of A Dormouse’ is exclusive to this compilation).

There are a few lame ducks – life for us seems to short to countenance bands like Los Campesinos! and Sad Day For Puppets – but in the main this is a fine collection of retro-fetishist pop songs. Still, do you really need to buy these songs when they’ve already been blogged to within an inch of their life? Are we allowed to say that?
