Crammed Discs have announced details of Tradi-Mods vs Rockers, a double-disc compilation collecting 26 brand new remixes of Congotronics music.

Congotronics is Crammed’s ongoing series of albums focussing on electrified music from the Congo, curated and produced by Vincent Kenis. It began in 2004 with Congotronics by Konono N°1, who have since contributed a further two albums to the series, Live At Couleur Café (2007) and Assume Crash Position (2010).  Kasai Allstars (pictured above) is the only other group to have officially contributed a full-length LP to Congotronics (2008’s In The 7th Moon…), but 2005’s Buzz’n’Rumble In The Urb’n’Jungle featured tracks from a number of different artists, among them Sobanza Mimanisa, Kisanzi Congo and Kasai Allstars offshoots Masanka Sankayi and Basokin.

The intense polyrhythms, tonal ingenuity and all-round DIY derring-do of Congotronics music have earned its makers a substantial fanbase among electronic and experimental artists all over the world. Tradi-Mods vs Rockers makes explicit some of these debts and admirations: Animal Collective offer up a version of Kasai Allstars’ ‘Quick As White’, and that same group are also reinterpreted by the mighty Shackleton, Juana Molina and Afro-nut dubstepper Bass Clef.

Most of the remixes, though, are of Konono N°1 – those stepping up to work their magic on the ebullient source material include Mark Ernestus (Rhythm & Sound, Hard Wax), ambient composer Sylvain Chauveau, musically omnivorous Glaswegians Optimo, Glenn Kotche of Wilco, Andrew Bird, Oneida, Micachu & The Shapes and the Boredoms’ Eye.
