Having spent recent years garnering much-deserved support for the modern funk he creates both solo and with Lazer Sword, the indomitably flexible Lando Kal has found a new outlet for another side of his music, in the form of Scuba’s Hotflush label.
It’s no surprise to see this particular release surfacing on Hotflush either – ‘Further’ hums with the same accessible Berlin warmth that’s typified previous label releases from Scuba, Sigha and George Fitzgerald. Revelling in a hypnotic, ever-climbing bassline, the track really comes into its own in its second half, where the kick-clap rhythms are broken down into a more shuffly affair; vocals chopped, flat synths spliced into stabs, and as a result, interests particularly piqued.
As with Lazer Sword and indeed his partner-in-crime Low Limit, Lando Kal’s strength is in his malleability; there’s an inherent flexibility to his sound that allows his production to shine just as brightly on a track like 2010’s French electro-leaning ‘3D Action Jackson’ as it does on ‘Further’s foray into the more gossamer end of the house spectrum. It perhaps lacks the immediacy and the punch of some prior Lando (and Hotflush) work, but its washed-out melodies and dreamy vocal refrain make it a more-than-worthy addition to the label’s repertoire.
