Chairlift’s ‘Met Before’ falls somewhere between scuzzy indie stomper and new-wavy pop confection: the verses sound like The Breeders, the choruses like The Pointer Sisters.

Hoya Hoya man Illum Sphere (aka Ryan Hunn) has turned out a remix that’s only tangentially related to the original. Hunn’s productions are often compared to Flying Lotus circa Los Angeles; ‘Met Before”s retro-futurism, by contrast, recalls FlyLo’s dinky ‘Kill Your Co-Workers’. Both tracks show producers with an interest in thick electronic textures opting for something much more spartan.

A quantized Atari bassline drives the track, and a mangled woodblock hammers away relentlessly in the background. Caroline Polachek’s vocal is tweaked and distorted just beyond recognition. Hunn’s take is busy, cluttered, and vaguely threatening. Chairlift pitch for dreaminess; Illum Sphere goes directly for angst.

The remix is part of a 12″ remix series from Young Turks; reworks are to follow from Martyn, John Talabot and The Field. Anyone hoping to catch Chairlift live can do so at London’s The Scala on April 25. You can download the track, exclusive to FACT, below.
