Fatima Al Qadiri: our favourite Senegal-born, Kuwait-raised, New York-based, hyphen-friendly producer

2011’s Warn-U EP (released as Ayshay on Tri Angle) put Middle Eastern devotional music through the mangle, and follow-up Genre Specific Xperience stuck to the rubric of its title, panning across styles and borders for inspiration. Her music has the lo-fi archness of your next Hippos In Tanks producer, but her diversity sets her apart.

A new Genre Specific Xperience remix EP, GSX Remixes, is due on UNO NYC later this month. DJ Rashad, Kingdom and Ikonika are among the impressive names charged with turning Al Qadiri on her head. Below, stream Girl Unit’s take on Qadiri’s ‘How Can I Resist U’.

The original was a self-described “love letter to London”, a blur of dubby textures and lurid C64 synths that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a Night Slugs release sheet. Girl Unit’s a neat fit on paper, then, and an even better call in practice. The producer gives the track a Speak’N’Spell overhaul, strapping Al Qadiri’s synth line onto rattling clock-radio snares and tossing in some vocoder gurgles. You also get one of those widescreen, wide-eyed breakdowns that the producer can seemingly knock out in his sleep.

GSX Remixes is due on May 18. You can also watch the first play of the whacko new video for Genre Specific Xperience highlight ‘D-Medley’ below.
