One of the many things that’s great about Chicago footwork is that although it’s dance music in the term’s most literal sense, it’s also a canvas for artists to get as weird as they want.

You only have to listen to DJ Nate’s Da Trak Genious, or Young Smoke’s more astral moments, to see footwork’s potential as incredibly experimental music. Outside of Chicago, you have people like Patrice & Friends and Machinedrum flipping the template in new ways, and Baltimore’s Lil Jabba is arguably the style’s most unique adopter. An associate with DJ Rashad’s Tek Life crew, Jabba’s been flooding Soundcloud with some of the strangest footwork around for a couple of years now, and releasing Bandcamp EPs like last year’s Swisher.
