Martina Topley-Bird, Mark Lanegan and friends cover The xx's 'Crystalised'

The trip hop chanteuse and the alt rocker team up on this cover of The xx’s breakout hit.

On this cover of ‘Crystalsed,’ Martina Topley-Bird (known for her vocal work with Tricky and Massive Attack) and Mark Lanegan take on the Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim vocal parts, respectively. It’s not a stretch to say that the dulcet Topley-Bird and the gravelly Lanegan are more accomplished vocalists than the xx leads, and the pair energize the song with a new character.

The cover settles in on a syrupy groove, with the melody provided by some xx-friendly xylophone. The genesis of the song is unknown, although Massive Attack and Warpaint are named as possible contributors. The vocalists previously collaborated on ‘Need One,’ the lead single from Topley-Bird’s 2003 album Quixotic.
