Aficionados of knockabout 4/4, pay heed.

Fledgling imprint Nineteen89 have only one release to date, Rumah & Progressions’ acid-inflected ‘Chance Meeting’. Next up is newcomer producer Metrist, who hails from Cambridge and clearly has a very soft spot for the rollicking techno-not-techno turned out by the likes of Blawan, Tessela and Randomer.

On new EP Argent, the last of those three is the most obvious reference point – but where Randomer goes in for force, Metrist opts for meticulousness. Argent showcases some skittering, antic drum programming that occasionally recalls Aphex, Autechre et al. Acid lines burrow through the clatter, and the mood is jacking from tip to toe. It’s a tactual set, and one that suggests a talented producer in the process of locating his voice. FACT have the first stream of Argent, due next week on 12″ and digital download, below.
