Multi-instrumentalist Bob Chance has had a fascinating sort of  journey.

Having appeared on Opportunity Knocks at the age of 12, Chance was recording for Atlantic Records in his teens and working with veteran songwriter Al Lewis. Having put in time with teeny-bopper groups The Raiders and The Enchanters, he packed himself off the join the US Marine Corps. Since his return, he’s released a stack of self-recorded albums, accruing substantial cult cachet along the way.

1980’s It’s Broken! is the best-known and best-loved of his musical statements. Chance recorded the record almost entirely on his lonesome, and distributed the LP himself using a private press. It’s Broken! is an oddball mixture of funk, soul and disco; DJ Shadow (no doubt with his eye on the cover art) described the album as “hairy forearm disco”.

It’s Broken is now set to get a vinyl rerelease courtesy of the maverick Trunk Records imprint. The seven-track LP will be strictly limited to 1000 copies. Label mailman Jonny Trunk promises a record with “a touch of Giorgio Moroder, a bit of the Beach Boys and a sprinkle of Glen Campbell as a serial killer”. Sounds like a house party we’d like to get an invite to.

It’s Broken! will see release on June 4.
