Styles P the latest to react to Kanye West's kilt with worrying homophobia

As most people know by now, last year Kanye West performed at a Hurricane Sandy benefit concert, topping off an oddly Noob Saibot-esque outfit with a Givenchy leather kilt.

So far, so Kanye, but the world being what it is, this particular storm brewed to the point where Kanye reportedly had his team contact photo agencies in an attempt to have shots of the outfit removed from the internet (so far, so Beyonce). What’s more worrying than the tabloid-y coverage of the outfit, however, is some of the reactions it received from the hip-hop world.

In February, Lord Jamar of New York hip-hop veterans Brand Nubian quietly gave out of one of the most short-sighted interviews of the year, proudly declaring that he hash-tagged a Kanye-related picture with the phrase #halfafag on Instagram, and claiming that Kanye’s Givenchy kilt is the latest stage in hip-hop’s descent down a homoerotic rabbit hole that started when rappers started wearing earrings in both ears.

Now, Lox / Wu Block member Styles P has given an interview to Vlad TV – who also published the Jamar piece – claiming that he’d “lose his mind” if his fourteen-year old son came home wearing a skirt because of Kanye West. A$AP Rocky – who’s given various interviews declaring that hip-hop needs to ditch the homophobia, though it’s worth noting that his lyrics don’t always reflect that attitude – is then brought up by the interviewer, and Styles’ eventual conclusion is that artists need to recognise the influence they have over “the masses”; and naturally, that they should use that influence to pretend that gay culture simply doesn’t exist, or even better, exists only to be shunned.

Someone take both guys to a Mykki Blanco concert pronto, or at least show them what a blinkered crackpot DMX looked in his semi-infamous interview about Lil B’s mixtape I’m GayStyles’ partner in the Lox, Jadakiss, on the other hand, seems to have a much more forward-thinking take on things – let’s hope more of the hip-hop world starts to take note from his approach.
