R.I.P. 'Police and Thieves' reggae star Junior Murvin, 1949–2013

Reggae star Junior Murvin passed away on Monday aged 67.

Murvin’s son Kevin Smith told the Jamaica Observer that his father was admitted to hospital last Thursday to seek treatment for diabetes and hypertension.

Born Murvin Smith in Port Antonio, Jamaica, the singer was was best known for his Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry-produced 1976 single ‘Police and Thieves’.

The song became an international hit and was covered by The Clash on their 1977 debut album, introducing a generation of punks to the world of reggae and dub.

Only last week, pop-punker-turned-super-producer Ariel Rechtshaid told FACT that he “discovered reggae backwards” through The Clash’s cover of ‘Police and Thieves’.
