Aaliyah biopic heads to Lifetime

The cable network plans a film about the gone-too-soon R&B star.

Just after announcing plans for a Whitney Houston project, Lifetime has added a film about Aaliyah to their slate. The role of Aaliyah will be played by Disney Channel starlet Zendaya Coleman (who, like Aaliyah, performs under her first name). Along with acting, Coleman is also a dancer and singer, having released a self-titled electro-pop album last year.

Aaliyah passed away in a plane crash in The Bahamas at the age of 22. The film is based on Christopher Farley’s biography Aaliyah: More Than A Woman and is tentatively titled Aaliyah: Princess of R&B; it will be directed by Bradley Walsh (Turn the Beat Around) and written by Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar).

Earlier this year, Drake’s controversial, posthumous Aaliyah album was canned for good after Aaliyah’s brother, regular collaborator Timbaland and DMX all spoke out against the release. [via]
