Weekly album sales in the US have reached their lowest point since the Nielson SoundScan system began in 1991.
According to Billboard, last week saw a total of 3.97 million albums sold, the first time weekly sales have fallen below 4 million. The week’s highest-selling album, Wiz Khalifa’s [above] Blacc Hollywood, sold 90,000 in its first week.
An anonymous record label sales executive claims in the article that “Sales have been going in the wrong direction all year. I guess its overdue, when you look at [the growth of streaming].”
