Kanye has responded to the heavy censorship of his performance at the Billboard Music Awards.

Kanye West closed out the Billboard Music Awards earlier this week with a passionate but largely censored performance of recent single ‘All Day’ and Yeezus cut ‘Black Skinhead’. Unfortunately for Kanye, large swathes of his vocals were muted for up to fifteen seconds at a time. Over a minute of the relatively short performance was silenced.

Representatives for Kanye have today shared a statement regarding the performance, expressing their disappointment that West was “grossly over-censored”. You can read the statement below and watch the performance here. [via Pitchfork]

“Kanye West was grossly over-censored at the Billboard Music Awards. Non-profane lyrics such as “with my leather black jeans on” were muted for over 30 second intervals. As a result, his voice and performance were seriously misrepresented.

It is ridiculous that in 2015, unwarranted censorship is something that artists still have to fight against.

Although West was clearly set up to face elements beyond his control during the live broadcast, he would like to apologize to the television audience who were unable to enjoy the performance the way he envisioned.”
