The late singer’s estate responds to the actress playing her on Twitter.
Today, the trailer was released for Nina the long gestating biopic of Nina Simone starring Zoe Saldana. The film caused a stir of controversy due to the casting of Saldana, who is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, among people who felt the actress was too petite and light-skinned to play the iconic singer.
Earlier today, Saldana alluded to the criticism and tweeted a quote from Simone: “I’ll tell you what freedom is to me — no fear … I mean really, no fear.”
Now Simone’s official Twitter account, which is described as the “official Twitter for the estate & legacy of Dr. Nina Simone”, has responded directly saying, “Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life”. Find both tweets and the trailer for Nina below.
