Similar legislation has been introduced in Congress.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a new law to criminalize ticket bots, scalpers’ best means to acquire large numbers of tickets before fans. The move is an attempt to combat unfair buying and reselling practice in the state.

Ticket bots are automated programs able to buy tickets without a person being present. Though they have been previously banned, their use has now been made a class A misdemeanor, meaning scalpers with the software will face much larger fines and even jail time.

While this move in fighting ticket scalping is contained to the state, Pitchfork points out that legislation against bots is currently working its way through Congress, so a federal law could be the next step.
