The drummer died last fall.

The wife of Inspiral Carpets drummer Craig Gill has released a statement asking for greater awareness of tinnitus following an inquest into her husband’s death last fall left an open verdict, The Guardian finds.

The verdict means that while the coroner felt it was clear Gill killed himself, there was not enough proof of intent for the death to be legally recorded as a suicide. Gill had no history of depression, suicidal thoughts and left no note, but his wife Rose Marie points out, was concerned about his severe tinnitus which grew “so unbearable he felt there was no cure.”

“Although we struggle with the day-to-day existence of life without Craig, we are now able to discuss and promote awareness of tinnitus and men’s mental health,” she says in the statement. “It takes courage for men to speak out, to talk to one another, to share their thoughts and their fears. If you are one of those men, like Craig, we urge you to reach out to those you love and find comfort in sharing your pain.”

Gill’s surviving bandmates Graham Lambert, Stephen Holt and Clint Boon also attended the inquest and released a statement.

“Craig was a friend, a loyal son and brother, philosophical father and important member of our gang,” they wrote. “We feel extremely privileged to have spent the last 30 years making music with him.”
