Severed from Canadian drone lord Tim Hecker‘s upcoming full-length Virgins, ‘Black Refraction’ might be his most restrained treatment to date.

The track is based around a simple, rotating piano melody that slowly but surely falls under the influence of Hecker’s various treatments. Unusually however the distortion that laced his earlier catalogue is nowhere to be found, and the end result is not unlike William Basinski’s timeless Melancholia, which can only be a good thing.

Sabrina Ratte has added a fittingly hazy visual accompaniment to the track, and you can take a look below.
