Cats like music, just not your music.

There are now islands for cats, but what about music? Rather than just playing their feline friends Cashmere Cat or Meow The Jewels, scientists at the University of Wisconsin worked to find out if cats are capable of liking music.

Researchers hypothesized that “in order for music to be effective with other species, it must be in the frequency range and with similar tempos to those used in natural communication by each species.” They worked with a composer to create music under this framework, combining sounds that cats like and make — purring, suckling, wailing — in pitches and tempos that appeal to cats.

Published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, the study found that cats didn’t react to “human music,” but rubbed the speakers with their faces when they heard the “cat music.” Here are some samples of the cat songs, in a new genre we’re calling cat-ambient. [via PopSci]
