Finley Quaye, the 1990s pop star responsible for ‘Sunday Shining’ and other chart hits, has been convicted of headbutting a terminally ill man in a dispute over Game of Thrones.

Quaye denies attacking cancer patient Julian Ashley but was sentenced to 12 months probation at Highbury Corner Magistrates for having “lost his temper” with his former friend. Ashley “was watching television when the defendant came to the door and after letting him in continued watching,” the prosecutor said. “The defendant took exception to that and said: ‘Aren’t I more important than Game of Thrones?’ He became abusive… Without warning he headbutted Mr Ashley, causing a split to his nose and extensive bruising.”

Quaye has been ordered to perform 250 hours of community service and pay £620 costs with an £85 victim surcharge over the attack on Ashley, who is described as “frail and needs a mobility scooter and assistance at home.”

The court also heard that Quaye – who has 22 previous convictions and “a history of violent offending” according to the prosecutor – was bankrupted in 2012 and currently owes £383k in unpaid taxes. He reportedly now earns money from music sales and playing small gigs at a rate of £500 a show. “He is allowed to keep profits from live performances and online sales, but the biggest sum, his £35k-a-year royalties, goes towards his bankruptcy,” Quaye’s lawyer Samira Noor-Khan explained.

Quaye has declined to comment on the conviction. [via The Daily Star]
