In order to pay fewer royalties.

Spotify is considering a deal to make some upcoming releases exclusive to paid subcribers, The Financial Times reports.

As 9To5Mac points out, the deal is part of negotiations with record labels to reduce the amount of royalties paid.

“As part of the proposed deals, the music companies have agreed to trim the royalty fees that Spotify pays for their songs, according to people familiar with the discussions,” the Times report reads. “In exchange, Spotify would restrict the biggest album releases to its paid tier for a period of time.”

Spotify was rumored to be considering a similar move in 2015, but with new competition and new subscribers, it could become a reality in 2017. Earlier this month, the company reached 50 million paid subscribers.
