At least 20 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a mass shooting at an open-air country music festival in Las Vegas last night (October 1).

As BBC News reports, a gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel toward the Route 91 Harvest Festival, which was being held nearby.

Police later said a suspect identified as a local resident was “down,” adding that they did not believe there were any more active gunmen. They said they were looking for a companion travelling with the suspect as a “person of interest.”

Many hotels along the Las Vegas strip are still on lockdown.

This story is developing.

Update, Oct 2, 07:00 EST: Police now say at least 50 people have been killed and more than 200 injured.

The suspected gunman has been identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock. Authorities are searching for Paddock’s 62-year-old female companion Marilou Danley.

It is now the deadliest mass shooting in US history in recent times, with the death toll exceeding the 49 people killed at Pulse nightclub in Orlando last June.

Update, Oct 2, 10:00 EST: The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department now say that 406 people were taken to local hospitals.

Suspect Stephen Paddock killed himself as police entered his hotel room.

Marilou Danley, Paddock’s 62-year-old female companion whom police were searching for, was out of the country at the time of the attack. It is believed that Paddock used some of her identification documents.
