Geoff Barrow has revealed that Portishead are preparing to begin work on new material, but that the results might not be released in traditional album format.

Speaking to NME, the band’s producer and multi-instrumentalist explained that the band have now fulfilled their contract with Island, and, rather more ambiguously, that they had "big plans" for their next project, which they’ll be approaching from "a different angle".

"We are publishing-free and label-free at the moment," said Barrow, "So we’re kind of… well, we’re free!"

Bristol-based Barrow this month releases the debut album by his other band, BEAK>, via his own Invada label.
