At various points over the last two years at FACT, we’ve called Salem “the best band in the world (kind of)”, proclaimed their Water and Yes I Smoke Crack singles classics, and declared that there’s “no way they can’t be massive”.

Recent excursions by the East Coast trio (‘Frost’, ‘OhK’) have been more on an inverse Cocteau Twins tip, using Heather’s eerie vocals to portray some sort of useless despair in the face of death rather than a heavenly dream-state, but this recent, free-to-download remix of Gucci Mane’s ‘Round One’ finds them going back to the Juke-influenced, chopped ‘n’ screw-icide sound that featured on those early EPs, turning Gucci’s vocals into something resembling the last rites and probably reminding a whole new batch of Atlas Sound fans that Southern hip-hop, like, exists.
