Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett are taking their celebrated musical Monkey: Journey To The West to the Big Apple.

Monkey follows the travails of a monk travelling from China to India on the hunt for sacred Buddhist texts, guided by a string of enchanted animals. Albarn – who’s continued to dabble in theatrical fare with his Dr. Dee project – was in charge of scoring, with Hewlett covering animation, design and costumes. Director Chen Shi-Zheng devised the concept and penned the libretto.

The New York run will take place from July 6-28 at the David H. Koch Theater as part of the the Lincoln Center Festival. The full schedule for the performances, which mark Monkey‘s first appearance in the city, is below. [via Pitchfork]
