Meet Murray Gershenz, better known as Music Man Murray.

Murray collects records, and at some point in his life he decided to start selling them. Cut to many years later and he’s in the midst of a 3-4 million dollar collection, and somehow after all this time and stress he still seems to revel in what’s important: the music itself.

Richard Parks, son of Van Dyke Parks (who fittingly contributes a score to the film) has put together a charming twenty-minute portrait of the man, and in doing so has given us a look into what it means to be a true record fetishist. This isn’t about sitting on eBay trying to score a cheap deal on some boxset or other that you can later flip for a profit, this is the bullshit-free process of collecting music itself – the excitement, the sound, and the discovery.

It’s a timely feature since Record Store day was only this weekend, and is a good reminder that while Saturday was a good time to find rarities, you can visit a store like Murray’s any day of the week and pick up LPs, 7″s and 12″s that you actually might be surprised about (we stand firm in our belief that while very good, there’s not a lot about a fancy 4LP version of GZA’s Liquid Swords that will really surprise).

Take a look at the entire film below, and allow yourself to fall in love with the sound of wax, the smell of old cardboard and paper and the process of digging itself all over again. [via Stereogum]
