Lil Wayne dropped by Pepsi after Emmett Till controversy

Wayne’s distasteful ‘Karate Chop’ lyrics cause him to lose a sponsor.

Earlier this year, Lil Wayne came under fire for his lyrics on a remix of Future’s ‘Karate Chop’, which included a reference to murdered civil rights hero Emmett Till. While Future’s label, Epic Records, apologized and took down the “unauthorized” version of the song, Wayne had not commented until earlier this week, issuing a non-apology that did not satisfy Till’s estate.

The AP reports that Lil Wayne’s promotion deal with Mountain Dew has ended. Mountain Dew parent company PepsiCo said in a statement that Wayne’s “offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.” Meanwhile, a publicist for Wayne attributed the split to “creative differences.”

A rough week for Mountain Dew-rap relations, as a Tyler, the Creator-directed ad was pulled after critics called it “arguably the most racist commercial in history.”
