Pixies' Black Francis announces graphic novel about "homicidal gypsies" and "porn-peddling peasants"

Black Francis/Frank Black – never an artist shy to plump for a strikingly visual lyric – is turning his hand to the graphic novel game.

As The Guardian report, the Pixies singer will publish his debut graphic novel in the new year. The Good Inn has been co-written with Pixies biographer Josh Frank,  and will be illustrated by familiar comic illustrator Steven Appleby. The tome will arrive through UK graphic novel publisher SelfMadeHero in May 2014.

According to the publisher, the book follows the travails of a teenager called Soldier Boy (no relation, we assume) as he tries to escape the fallout from an explosion in Toulon, France. SelfMadeHero tout The Good Inn as a “fantastic piece of illustrated fiction based on a yet-to-be-written soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t yet exist.” The pitch reads as follows:

“Navigating past homicidal gypsies, combative soldiers and porn-peddling peasants, he takes refuge in a secluded inn, where he finds himself centre stage in the making of the world’s first narrative pornographic film.”

Not for the first time, Pixies are currently one member down: Kim Shattuck, drafted in to replace the AWOL Kim Deal, has now parted ways with the group. The band have also recently been announced as headliners of Field Day 2014.
